SoFi’s new SoFi Earn product puts a bank deposit and a blockchain transfer close together in one app. They still have different protections. As of October 24, 2026, SoFi describes SOFIE as a deposit eligible for FDIC insurance within applicable limits. SoFiUSD, also called SOFID in its disclosures, is a separate payment stablecoin with no FDIC or SIPC insurance. Converting between them changes what you hold. What launched, and who can access it

SoFi announced SOFIE on October 22, with rollout to SoFi Crypto members continuing through November. Each SOFIE represents $1 deposited at SoFi Bank. Members can convert it 1:1 into SoFiUSD, then use the stablecoin for crypto purchases or transfers to supported external wallets over blockchain rails. The announcement describes 24/7 movement, but rollout does not mean every member already has access. A tokenized deposit represents a claim on underlying commercial-bank money. Tokenization changes how that claim is recorded; it does not create an extra pool of insured cash. Different banks’ token systems can also work differently. A general description of programmable payments or cross-bank transfers should not be read as confirmation that SOFIE offers every such feature. The conversion boundary

| Check | SOFIE | SoFiUSD / SOFID |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Bank deposit represented by a token | Payment stablecoin |
| Deposit insurance | Eligible, subject to applicable limits | Not FDIC or SIPC insured |
| Main role in this workflow | Hold the interest-bearing deposit | Buy crypto or transfer on supported networks |

SoFi says SOFID is intended to be redeemable for dollars at 1:1, while warning of delays, disruptions and possible loss. Supported blockchain transfers are generally final and irreversible. A dollar target and a familiar bank name are therefore insufficient reasons to treat the converted balance as insured savings. Check the asset name on the confirmation screen before approving a conversion. [Product disclosures](https://www.sofi.com/crypto/earn/)

Why the insurance limit needs a second look

The October 20 rate sheet explicitly excludes SOFIE from the SoFi Insured Deposit Program. Its underlying funds remain at SoFi Bank and aggregate with your other deposits there in the same ownership category for insurance purposes. A new token balance does not create a separate allowance. [Rate sheet](https://www.sofi.com/crypto/legal/tokenized-deposit-rate-sheet)

SoFi’s educational explanation describes the standard limit as $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. It also distinguishes bank-failure protection from mishaps such as losing a wallet or sending assets to the wrong address. Those are different risks. [Educational explainer](https://www.sofi.com/learn/content/what-are-tokenized-deposits/)

Consider a simplified hypothetical: $180,000 of eligible single-owner checking and savings deposits remaining at SoFi Bank, plus $90,000 in same-category SOFIE, totals $270,000. Against a standard $250,000 limit, $20,000 is above that limit. This arithmetic assumes no sweep placement, other deposits or special coverage rules. It is not a ruling on any reader’s accounts. Verify where funds actually sit and how they are titled before using this example.

Read 4.40% as a dated, variable rate

The rate sheet effective October 20 lists 4.31368% interest and 4.40% APY. Interest accrues daily on end-of-day balances and is compounded and credited monthly. The APY assumes principal and interest stay for 365 days without transactions. The bank may change the rate; the headline is not a fixed one-year return. [Rate sheet](https://www.sofi.com/crypto/legal/tokenized-deposit-rate-sheet)

A useful comparison starts with your intended holding period and access needs. Someone planning a transfer tomorrow faces a different decision from someone keeping cash untouched. Read the current rate and account agreement, compare any fees, and check how you would get money back into the form you need. A higher advertised APY alone does not settle whether the workflow fits emergency spending cash.

Before you convert

  • Confirm whether the displayed balance is SOFIE or SoFiUSD; save the relevant confirmation and disclosures.
  • Add up deposits actually held at SoFi Bank in the same ownership category; check any sweep arrangements separately.
  • Check the supported destination network, wallet address, fees and transfer conditions. Do not assume every network is supported.
  • Verify access in your account and read the current agreement. This launch does not establish availability for India-based readers.
