Anatomy of a Google result: title tag, URL, meta description, and rich snippets from schema markup.

The on-page essentials

  • Title tag — the blue headline in Google. Keep it 50–60 characters, put the main keyword near the front, make it click-worthy. One unique title per page.
  • Meta description — 150–160 characters that sell the click. Not a direct ranking factor, but it strongly affects click-through rate.
  • Heading structure — exactly one <h1> per page, then <h2>/<h3> in logical order, like chapters of a book.
  • URL — short, readable, with the keyword: /seo-course beats /page?id=8231.
  • Content quality — answer the searcher's question completely, in your own expert words. Thin or copied content never lasts.
  • Images — compress them, and give every image descriptive alt text (helps SEO and accessibility).
  • Internal links — link related pages together with descriptive anchor text. This spreads authority and helps Google discover pages.
  • Canonical tag<link rel="canonical" href="…"> tells Google which URL is the "official" version when duplicates exist (e.g. with/without ?utm=… parameters).
  • Schema markup — structured data (JSON-LD) that describes your page to Google: Article, FAQ, Product, Course, LocalBusiness. Schema can earn rich results — stars, FAQs, prices — directly in the search page.
Practice now: open any page of your website, press Ctrl+U (view source) and search for <title>, description, canonical and application/ld+json. Missing any of them? That is your first task. Our Free Site Audit tool checks all of this automatically.
Key takeaway: Every page needs a unique title, a compelling meta description, one H1, clean URL, helpful content, alt text, internal links, a canonical tag and schema. Test every page — not just the homepage.
