Why backlinks decide rankings
The web's voting system
Google's original breakthrough was treating a link as a vote. Two decades later it still holds: when a respected site links to you, some of its trust flows across. Pages with strong, relevant link profiles outrank better-written pages that nobody references.
This is why a brand-new site with perfect on-page SEO still struggles — it has the content, but not yet the votes.
Referring domains > total backlinks
One website linking to you 500 times is roughly one vote. Five hundred different websites linking once each is five hundred votes. That is why referring domains is the headline number in this report.
Chase relevance and variety, never volume. Buying bulk links raises your spam score and risks a penalty that takes months to undo — this is taught free in Class 4: Off-Page SEO.
